Chapter 17

The sun is high in the sky when my eyes open. Tarq has rolled over me, with his shoulder and chest covering my head. I’m tucked comfortably under him and feel safe and protected. I nuzzle into his chest in case I’m not as close as I can get, and he tightens his grip on me. He ducks down to kiss the top of my head and sighs happily.

Someone in the room clears their throat, and we both tense up. I want to see who it is, and Tarq tucks me further under his shoulder. I’m unsure of the proper way to handle being protected, but I’m nearly positive I’m not supposed to giggle like I am. Tarq lifts his head to look around before groaning and letting me go.

“He’s not here for me,” he says, smiling as he releases his hold on me and closes his eyes.

I sit up and look around the room. Dax leans against the fireplace, stoking a small fire that looks like it’s been burning for a while. I stare at the back of Dax’s head for a moment, then look down at Tarq, who is now pretending to sleep next to me. My eyes flick to the trees outside, hoping to borrow a little of their calm and tranquil appearance because I can feel my anger bubbling at these men I love as they test my patience.

“Dax,” I say, breathing out slowly, “We’ve discussed how much I hate waking up to random people in my room.”

Turning around to look at me, he leans against the hearth and flexes his jaw, trying to hide his grin. “I know we did,” he says. “I was there.”

Tarq chuckles in his pretend slumber.

I pick up a pillow and hit Tarq in the head with it. “Are you two kidding me right now?”

Dax circles his finger around his face. “Do I look like I give a shit?” Tarq busts out laughing and covers his head with his arm as Dax throws some clothes at me. “Get dressed. I need your help with something.”

I watch him exit the room, leaving the door open. I look down at Tarq, who’s still giggling and getting louder the longer I’m silent. I grab the shirt that Dax threw at me, which happens to be Tarq’s, and pull it on in a huff. “I’m taking my bond back.”

Tarq latches his arms around my waist and pulls me down next to him. He smiles and cups my cheek. “That’s not how that works.” He kisses me, and I instantly deepen it, pulling him to me by his hair. He growls when I push him off me.

I jump off the bed, looking for my shorts. “Well, it should,” I grumble. “How about you go make me something to eat, Chuckles.” I pull my shorts up and walk to the door. When I turn around, Tarq is snuggled back into the pillows. “Tarq?”

He stretches out and motions his hand over his body. “I’ll have to cover all of this up, Darya.
